Chapter 2
When it comes to communication strategically, I can relate my current workplace to this very well. Our current manager believes communication is the key to success in any work environment. The first example is our monthly employee meetings. These meetings open with what is going on in the upcoming month and how to do a new task if there is any. After everyone is comfortable with that, the meeting is open for discussion to talk about any problems or if someone is not up-to-date on a current procedure. After all employees are properly educated, everyone is encouraged to participate in team building exercises. Another example of good communication that helped me in my workplace was when my manager would pull each individual aside during their shift and ask them about any problem they encountered during that shift. I think this was very helpful because if she did not do that, I would of forgot some of the problems or questions I faced that day and would not get answers to those situations. This also made communication more effective because it showed that the manager cared about her employees. It also made the employees feel comfortable approaching the manager about any problem or question.

I like the idea/practice of a boss pulling someone aside to inquire what issues they may have faced on the shift. Learning is much more helpful if it can be applied immediatly. Such a practice also encourages an employee to be more forthcoming about potential issues they need to communicate.
ReplyDeleteCommunication is always better when it is face- to face. Pulling someone aside to talk about any problems is a great way to communicate. When communicating with a group of people it is always hard for one individual to admit that there is a problem. Having a manager that is aware of these issues makes it better for the company.

ReplyDeleteI think that the communication method is an ongoing process. It usually works as a circle because we deliver message to the second party and then get the response back from them. It is more like to and forth game. In terms of communication, we can see that it is a 3 component process i.e. organization, the constituency and the message. Usually formulating the organization strategy involves the organization to set considerable objectives. In this situation, the company must also analyze the constituencies, i.e. who the second party is, what information’s do they expect, what do they think about the organization and what information’s do they know about the communication of the organization. The final step of analyzing the constituencies helps the company to set the communication strategy. After that, the organization must set the structure of the message carefully before delivering it through different means of communication.
ReplyDeleteExample in personal life
Using the appropriate channel of communication at the right moment for a message is really important. It also applies in our daily life. Last time there was a TV show in which my friend had to play a game with the program host. He tried to send me a text message through his cell phone to inform me to watch it. Next day, when I met him, he asked me if I liked the way he played the game in the TV show. But, I was unaware about the situation completely. When he told me the entire story, I came to know what was going on. The actual problem was that I did not get any message from him because I had blocked incoming texts from my phone plan. That was the reason I did not receive his message. He should have tried to reach home with some other means of communication such as a phone call, or even an email. In this way I could be aware of his plans and message.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree Shuichi, facial communication is very important and particularly for top managers who need to be respected. I remember that in the last company i worked we had emails exchanges everyday, phone meetings with headquarters every two days, conference calls with webcams every two weeks and every semester the top manager came for a two-three days visit and to meet personally all employees. They felt involved in the multinational thanks to that.
ReplyDeleteYes, communication is the key to success. If a manager doesn’t hold a meeting periodically, subordinates will have to do their job without knowing why the company decided to adopt this strategy. My current boss hold a meeting weekly, so team member can understand what’s going on and work in assent. It has been said that we have less conversation in the office by the progress of network, such as internet and email. However, I believe that no matter how the new channels make a progress, facial communication will be still important.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that face-to-face communication is important as we can observe the implied message that the top management wants to convey to its fellow employees. I think Shuichi was referring this situation as the one-to-many type of communication. Sometimes it is quite impossible for a manager to ask everyone about the concerns regarding to works due to time constraints and the span of control constraints.
ReplyDeletecommunication is essential when doing group projects. there are so many ways to communicate with group members. personally,i like to communicate via email since its convenient and efficient. however, i realize that some messages may be distorted if the receiver understand the message in a different way. so its always better if you can communicate face to face. the good thing about face to face communication is you can get the feedback instantly which help you to work more efficiently and diminish the misunderstanding as soon as possible.
